small fruits
We use the garden next to the gîte for fruit: redcurrants,
blackcurrants, red-black hybrids and lots and lots of strawberries.
Our raspberries (which is our main crop after the shiitakes) and a
few blackberry bushes are on a different slope further to the east.
Three, 50-metre rows of raspberry bushes give us nearly a ton of
raspberries per annum. We turn most of this into juice to mix with
apple juice for the local market. We are planning to expand our
range of juices in the near future.
We also produce raspberry
vinegar but, of course, the most delicious is a little bowl of
raspberries, fresh off the bush, after a good meal!
Come to the gîte and pick your own!
In Florac, the local metropolis (population 2,000!) 25 kilometres
away, there is "Chez les Paysans", a collective
shop and restaurant created in 2007 by 18 local farmers with the aim
of cutting out the middleman between producer and consumer. Here you
can buy and consume local produce at a reasonable price. We were
founding members of the association that runs this collective.
